The memorial in the churchyard commemorates Father Bill Peters.
Father Bill Peters was a Catholic priest at the parish church of St Helens, East Gresford. Father Peters served the parish for 26 years. Father Bill served in the Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War as a chaplain in the Pacific theatre. He was also instrumental in introducing to the district the Sisters of St Joseph, who worked in the schools and remote areas of the Gresford-Paterson region.
