The plaque commemorates English gardener, horticulturist and nurseryman Michael Guilfoyle (Circa 1814 - 1884).
He later established Guilfoyle's Exotic Nursery in Double Bay on land owned by Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. Here he was a leading supplier of the exotic Jacaranda tree using his own grafting methods. Guilfoyle died at his home Athelstane in Windsor Street, Paddington on 9 April 1884. His son William Guilfoyle had a celebrated career in Melbourne as the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.
