The statue commemorates Australian cricketer Fred Spofforth (1853 - 1926).

Spofforth was one of the first genuine stars of the game of cricket renowned for his colourful personality and ability to thrive in the spotlight. He took 94 wickets at 18.41 in 18 Tests and 853 first-class wickets at 14.95 in 155 matches. The fast bowler, whose stunning performance at The Oval in 1882 led to the creation of the Ashes, has been immortalised in a life-size bronze statue.
