Eddie GilbertPrint Page Print this page

A headstone commemorates the Aboriginal cricketer, Eddie Gilbert who dismissed Sir Donald Bradman for a duck in 1931.

On November 6, 1931 Gilbert did the unimaginable. After a spell of bowling that Bradman acknowledged as the fastest he ever faced, he dismissed the mighty Don for a duck. Disbelieving that a relative unknown, coming off a run of only a few paces, could so unsettle the world`s greatest batsman, Gilbert`s critics labelled him a chucker. He passed every test asked of him and went on to play a total of 23 matches for Queensland, taking 87 wickets at an average of 28.98 runs, but died in obscurity in 1978 after almost 30 years in Wolston Park Hospital, Goodna.
