The tombstone over the grave was erected by the South Melbourne Football Club to commemorate Matthew Minchin, who was a footballer, cricketer and Vice-President of the club who died of brain fever on the 7th April 1890.

Now the labourer`s task is o`er,
Now the battle days is past,
