The Peter Hearnden Memorial Oval commemorates Flight Lieutenant Peter Hearnden who died with five other Flight Lieutenants (Alec Young, Reg Jones, Marty Burke, Don Gow and Pete Dun­bar), when all four of the Vampires of the Red Sales crashed during a practice display in Au­gust 1962 near the Dutson Bombing Range.
