The monument commemorates Charles Brodie who drowned in the Nambucca River on the 11th March 1890. The monument, which features a broken column, was erected by his shipmates and friends.

MONDAY.  Charles Brodie, a native of Scotland, aged 27, steward of the steamship Wellington, was drowned to-day by the capsizing of a boat at Macksville, where he had gone for provisions for the steamer. The body has not been recovered owing to the fresh that is running.
