100 Years since First Vintage at Katnook EstatePrint Page 
The plaque commemorates 100 years since the first wine vintage in the Katnook Woolshed was produced in 1896.
In 1861, Scottish immigrant, John Riddoch arrived at Penola in South Australia and realising the fertile soils in the area began to buy agricultural land. Katnook is the Indigenous word for “Fat Land” denoting the fertile character of the soil. In 1890 Riddoch established the Coonawarra Fruit Colony and planted 140 hectares of vines. His first commercial vintage was made in his woolshed at Katnook in 1896. The woolshed has now been restored and serves as Katnook’s barrel room.

THE KATNOOK WOOLSHED
The Katnook Woolshed was erected in
1862 for John Riddoch.
William Salter Jnr., winemaker, made his first
Coonawarra vintage in this building
(the second vintage in the District) in 1896.
This plaque commemorates 100 years since the first
vintage in the Katnook Woolshed.
Unveiled by Mr. Peter Seddon, grandson of
William Salter Jnr., on Thursday 5th December, 1996.
