The monument commemorates the first cultivation of wheat in Victoria in 1801.  

Lieutenant James Grant who in the ship "Lady Grant" made the first voyage eastward through the Bass Strait, named a number of coastal features and planted the first wheat and corn on Victorian soil at Churchill Island

This cairn was erected by the Victorian Farmer`s Union to commemorate the first cultivation of wheat in Victoria by Mr. James Grant in 1801 on this land known as Churchill Island

The Minister of Agriculture the Hon. G. L. Chandler C.M.G., M.L.C. unveiled this cairn on the 4th day of Nov. 1968
