The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.
An additional name was added at a later date to commemorate a soldier who died in World War Two.
Benambra War Memorial was originally erected by the residents of Omeo Plains to commemorate the fallen of World War One. In 1926, the Progress Association erected an enclosure consisting of bluestone pillars and a galvanised chain around the memorial at a cost of £64/13/.
