The Avenue of Honour was originally planted by a local resident, Gus Powell to commemorate those from Lysterfield who died in World War One. Of the fourteen men who enlisted, ten returned. Four English Oaks were planted for the soldiers killed in action and ten Silky Oaks planted for those who returned.
During the 1990s, the avenue was under threat by proposed road widening, however local resident Ed Williams acted to have the trees protected. The Knox and Yarra Ranges Councils, the Australian Army, and donations from local people provided plaques for the First and Second World Wars, Vietnam and Korean wars and service in East Timor.
