The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One and World War Two.  Additional inscriptions have been placed to commemorate Korea, Malaya and Vietnam.

The unveiling of the Newport War Memorial in the Gardens Reserve (opposite railway station) Newport will take place on Sunday, April 1st, at 3 p.m. The ceremony will be performed by Lieut.-General Sir Stanley Savige, KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED. His worship the Mayor, Cr. H. Armstrong, will preside. The appeal committee extends a cordial invitation to all to be present at the ceremony.
