The monument was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. It was relocated in 2000 to its present site from Fourth Street and now commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
ANZAC Day was celebrated at Cleve in appropriate manner. In the morning a large crowd assemnbled to witness the unveiling of a monument in the main street by Mr. E. J. Macgowan.
