The monument includes a "Digger" statue and was originally erected by the citizens of Bowen to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. The sandstone digger stands with head bowed and arms reversed atop a clock tower. The clocks on the memorial were damaged in a cyclone in 1958 and have not been replaced.
Additional names were added at a later date to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two and the Vietnam War. The memorial has been restored and the original marble plaques have been replaced by black granite plaques.
The Bowen War Memorial was unveiled by Mr Forgan Smith M.L.A on ANZAC Day 1926.
