The monument commemorates those from Cowra and District who undertook National Service in the Australian Defence Forces from 1951 to 1972.
On the monument is a plaque for Private Peter Jackson who was killed in action in the Vietnam War. Private Jackson worked as a station hand and with contractors erecting power lines before being drafted in May 1968. A member of 12 Platoon D Company, Peter was wounded in action on April 4, 1969 and was one of three killed by a mine explosion in the village of Dat Do with another 22 Australians being wounded on June 15, 1969.
Between 1951 and 1972, young Australian men were called up in two separate schemes for compulsory training in the Navy, Army and Air Force. Of them, 212 died on active service in Borneo and Vietnam. National Service was part of Australia’s defence preparedness for three decades.
