The monument commemorates the release of the Red Deer on Cressbrook Station in 1873.
Queen Victoria sent a small herd of red deer as a gift after Queensland was named in her honour. The deer were released at Cressbrook Station in Toogoolawah and descendants of those deer can be found throughout the region.

To The People of Queensland For Their Recreational Use.
The Red Deer Is Now Benignly Established In The Forested
Hill Country Of South East Queensland.
The Release Site Is Situated Approximately
8km North East Of This Position.
Erected And Presented To The People Of Queensland By
THE AUSTRALIAN DEER ASSOCIATION.
