The plaque commemorates the site of "The Gables" Nursing Home which operated from 1897 to 1928.

Hawker had a licensed maternity home registered as a `Lying-in-Home` from 1897 until 1928, which was run by Mrs Lucy Ward.   It was also known as The Gables and nearly 500 babies were born at the home before the Great Northern War Memorial Hospital which opened in 1924.
