The sundial commemorates the Golden Jubilee of the Aratula State School.

The sundial of wrought gun metal on a boulder of trachite from Warrill Creek was erected by the Aratula State School Committee to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the State School.

At the junction with Cunningham Highway a gate, called Carters Gate once stood and this became the `Gateway to learning' - the school motto of the provisional school opened on 29 May 1911 with an enrolment of 24 pupils. The school became a state school in 1913.
