The sculpture "Myth and Mirage" is a replica of whaleboat which Captain Charles Sturt and his expedition hauled across inland Australia in search of the "inland sea".  The replica was restored in 2014.

The plaque at the site lists the members of the expedition.

The first Europeans in the area were Charles Sturt and party on their ill-fated 1845 attempt to discover an inland sea. The original whaleboat was abandoned near Depot Glen. While stranded at Depot Glen they explored the corner country, visiting Mount Wood, Cooper Creek and the edge of the Simpson Desert in north-east South Australia.
