Major Thomas Mitchell ExpeditionPrint Page
The plaque and shelter commemorates Thomas Mitchell's 4th expedition. Major Edgar Towner V.C. a local landowner who spent much of his time tracing the paths of the explorers of western Queensland, is believed to be responsible for the plaque which contains an etching of Major Mitchell.
Thomas Mitchell was the first European man to describe this country. His party is recorded as having passed through the area in September 1846. He named Yuranigh Pond, near Isisford after his aboriginal headman.
