They came ... young and alone
Many thousands of young people made the long sea voyage to establish a new life in Australia. Some 20,000 youths arrived between 1911 and the 1980s sponsored mainly by privately funded humanitarian bodies. They were in addition to some 50,000 younger children, generally regarded as orphans, brought to these shores by charitable and religious agencies between the convict era and modern times. This plaque recognises the contribution these young migrant have made to Australia.
Donated by the Big Brother Movement
which sponsored the migration of 12,000 British youths,
by sea and air, and their resettlement 1925 -1982.
