To honour the pioneers
This monument is erected to commemorate the pioneers of the District and those who are buried at this site (Lot 26) in unmarked graves.
The area was known as the Township of Montague.
Land grant to Sir Montague Lowther Chapman in 1842 who had the region surveyed into 40 allotments.
