The memorial commemorates the first European settlement of Bahtahbah (Belmont) established by Reverend  L. Threlkeld of the London Mission Society and was erected during Belmont's 150th anniversary celebrations. The plaque on this memorial is now missing.

Rev. Daniel Tyerman and a wealthy layman, George Bennet, were visiting the society's mission fields and Reverend Threlkeld accompanied them to Australia, intending to return to England. In Sydney, the visitors proposed the establishment of a mission to the Aboriginals and Governor Brisbane was agreeable.  In January 1825 a site was fixed at Reid's Mistake (Belmont) on Lake Macquarie, and Threlkeld was appointed missionary.
