The monument commemorates the Afghan cameleers for their contribution to the settlement of South Australia,
From the 1860s to the 1920s approximately 3,000 Muslim cameleers came to Australia, mainly from the hills and plains of Afghanistan and British India, which today is Pakistan. They opened lines of supply, transport and communication between isolated settlements.
