O. N. WaterworthPrint Page
The plaque commemorates O. N. Waterworth for his services in the establishment of the Burnie Airport.
Mr. O.N. Waterworth was president of the North West Aero Club. The North West Aero Club leased the Wynyard racecourse and club volunteers built their own airstrip. It was officially opened in 1932, and a service to Launceston began in 1933. An unusual feature of the Wynyard airport was that a rail line crossed the strip. This odd arrangement continued until the rail line was closed in 2005.
