The Mick McKewen Grandstand was erected to commemorate the McKewen Family.

In 1881 William McKewen bought Ashley's Bright Hotel & Store in Kilkivan, and moved there with his family.   William Greer McKewen & family prospered in Kilkivan owning hotels, stores and several properties.  "Wongella" became the home property until it was sold in the mid 1950s.
