In 1953, gates and a fence at the entrance of Eureka Hall were erected to commemorate Helen McKay, a life member of the Eureka Stockade Progress Association who spent 40 years raising funds to beautify the park. The gates now consist of two large pillars with a top resembling an arch.

The plaque on one of the pillars was not unveiled until May 3rd 1998 during a McKay - Reddie family reunion organised by Di Christensen.
