The memorial commemorates Sergeant Edmund Parry who was shot dead in a gun battle between Police and the Hall gang at Jugiong on the 16th of November 1864. The memorial features a statue of the brave officer with his horse, and a storyboard explaining the legend of the gun battle.
In 1864, Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall and John Dunn held up a mail coach between Gundagai and Jugiong and in the ensuing melee, shot and killed the 32-year-old Sergeantt Edmund Parry. The battle took place five kilometres from Jugiong. Sergeant Parry’s murderer, Johnny Gilbert, was killed by police in 1865 and is buried at Binalong.
