The gates commemorate Miss Jessie McKechnie, who was a teacher at the Barwon Heads Primary School.
The Jessie McKechnie Memorial gates were erected in 1960, as a memorial to Miss Jessie McKechnie, a most valued and long-serving teacher of the Barwon Heads Primary School. As a teacher, Miss McKechnie had devoted almost 23 years of her teaching life to the Barwon Heads school. She taught at the old school on the outskirts of the town, at the Cray Pot in the Barwon Heads Park, and at its current location.
Miss McKechnie died in front of her class, which was a great shock to the community as she had not experienced any previous signs of illness.
