Endeavour Lookout was erected to commemorate Captain James Cook who sailed along the coastline in 1770.

Captain Cook was the first known European to sight these shores in 1770. He gave the prominent mountain behind Bermagui its name of Mount Dromedary because its shape reminded him of a camel’s back.

Captain James Cook claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia for Great Britain on 22 August 1770, naming eastern Australia, 'New South Wales.'
