The William Booth Memorial Citadel commemorates William Booth, a British Methodist preacher who founded The Salvation Army and became its first General (1878 – 1912). William Booth died in 1912. The building was formally opened on the 1st September 1917. 

The Christian movement with a quasi-military structure and government founded in 1865 has spread from London, England to many parts of the world and is known for being one of the largest distributors of humanitarian aid. 

Note: The property was sold by the Salvation Army in 2004.

This stone was laid to the glory of God by the Hon Sir Alexander J. Peacock K.C.M.G., M.L.A. Premier of Victoria  on Wednesday 4th April 1917.
