The portrait bust commemorates Sir John `Black Jack` McEwen, who was a Federal politician and the leader of the Country Party from 1958 to 1971.

He was the deputy to three Prime Ministers - Bob Menzies, Harold Holt and John Gorton and McEwen also led the country himself, for 23 days after Harold Holt disappeared at Cheviot Beach.

Sir John had a property near Stanhope and was a resident for more than fifty years.
