The lych-gate at the church commemorates King George VI (1895 – 1952) .

George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India and the first head of the Commonwealth.

A memorial to the late King George VI will be dedicated by Archbishop Halse tomorrow. It is the lych-gate into St. Paul's Church of England, Ashgrove. The church will be opened to-morrow. St. Paul's is the first Anglican brick church built in Brisbane since the war. An unusual feature of the lych-gate is that the church bell is mounted above it. The church cost more than £13,000. The foundation work, electrical fittings, and cleaning of grounds were done by voluntary labour by parishioners.
