The monument over the grave commemorates Captain William Charles Shipway (1862 - 1925), a veteran of the Soudan War who was Chairman of the Soudan Veterans' Association for 40 years. 

On Sunday afternoon, 31st October, at Gore Hill Cemetery, Lane Cove -Road, Capt. F. H. C. Brownlow, President of the Soudan Veteran's Association, unveiled a memorlal to the late Capt. W. C. Shipway, who for 40 years had been Chairman at the Annual Dinners. Capt. Brownlow briefly reviewed his Civil Masonic and Mllltary career. The memorial was erected by his surviving comrades and members of Capt. Shipway's family.
