The sculpture commemorates Archbishop Daniel Mannix who came to Australia in 1912, having been specifically selected by the incumbent, Archbishop Carr, as a useful weapon in redressing Catholic grievances.
Archbishop Mannix was one of the most vocal church leaders, and was outspoken on the issues of Irish nationalism, Communism and the education system. He was the Prime Minister’s main opponent on conscription during World War One, but was ironically Chaplain-General of the Australian Armed Forces during World War One.
