The plaque commemorates indigenous volunteer bushfire fighter Claude Cooper who died on the 3rd December 1957 while fighting fires in the Blue Mountains.

On 2 December 1957 huge fires raged through Blue Mountains towns. The worst-hit were Leura and Wentworth Falls, where 158 homes, shops, schools, churches and a hospital were destroyed (130 at Leura alone). At the peak of the blaze up to 1000 men fought desperately to save homes throughout the towns.
