The plaque commemorates the opening of the Corowa Branch of the Bank of Australasia in April 1880. The plaque was unveiled on the centenary of the event in 1980. 

The Bank of Australasia was an Australian bank in operation from 1835 to 1951. It merged with the Union Bank of Australia to form the Australia and New Zealnd Bank on 1 October 1951.
