Astronomers MonumentPrint Page
Known as the Astronomers Monument, the construction stands as an observatory and a memorial to Copernicus and other great astronomers. It was built by Alex Szperlak over a fifteen year period from 1983 to 1998.
After serving time in a Queensland prison for a crime he said he did not commit, Alex won the lottery and changed his name to Robinson Crusoe. Using buckets as formwork, he built the ‘Universe Observatory,’ as a monument to Copernicus and other great astronomers. Alex died when his camp burnt down in 1998.
